McCain Jokes Cigarrettes A Way To Kill Iranians

In his best move since singing his Beach Boys rendition of “Bomb Iran,” John McCain took a stab at making a funny today over reports of rising U.S. cigarette exports in Iran, saying “maybe that’s a way of killing ‘em.”
In case you’re not laughing, John McCain added “I meant that as a joke, as a person who hasn’t had a cigarette in 28 years, 29 years,” laughing out loud before he decided to shut up and decline further comment on the report.

Agreed.
Unfortunately McCain suffers from a severe case of stupidity.
Imagine if Sudan was the one he was cracking at. The world would be in an uproar of a leader joking at the expense of victims of genocide. Omar al-Bashir is one thing- Sudan’s people are another.
There’s a fine line between individuals aka corrupt leaders and people as a whole and it’s best to avoid generalizations all together. And in McCain’s case, it’s best to just shut it.

This is exactly what America must avoid, bellicose statements like, “wiping Israel off the map.” Where do you draw the line between (poor taste in) humor or insidious empty threats?
Saber rattling only increases the belligerence of Iran’s hardliners and undermines America’s credibility among our allies.
Mr. McCain should offer a formal apology to the Iranian people, the most pro-America Muslim nation, and America’s greatest ally in Iran against Islamic fundamentalism.
